Jurek bounding ahead |
For the second year in a row Scott Jurek has triumphed over heat, pain, thirst, and some of the world’s best-conditioned and toughest athletes in winning what many consider the most grueling foot race in the world, the Badwater Ultramarathon. This race begins in Badwater, Death Valley which, at 280 feet below sea level, is the lowest point in the western hemisphere, and ends at Mt. Whitney Portal at 8360 feet elevation and 135 miles from the starting point. During the course, runners climb over three mountain ranges for a total cumulative ascent of 13,000 feet and they make 2 descents for a cumulative total of 4,700 feet. Temperatures climb to as high as 130 degrees F (55C).
Last year, Scott ran the Badwater Ultramarathon only 16 days after winning the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run for the seventh consecutive time. The WS 100 is itself an incredible test of endurance and conditioning and few runners would be able to compete in another ultramarathon only two weeks later. But Scott has undeniably perfected a model of healthful living that keeps him in supreme condition and able to accomplish feats of performance and endurance few others can match. In fact only Scott has won both events back to back in the same year.
Scott attributes a large part of his success to his vegan diet that includes Green Magma daily and Magma Plus during his runs. He knows that these two supplements enhance his performance by providing valuable nutrients, antioxidants, and detoxifiers that increase energy output, provide protection against toxins, and promote cellular regeneration. Scott is also fortunate to have an excellent group of fellow runners and advocates who make up his racing support team led by his wife Leah.
As a professional physical therapist and running coach, Scott has been helping runners improve their health and performance and in 2000 he began his “stride analysis” service at Seattle Running Company. In 2003, Scott and his wife, Leah, formed their company called Beyond Running which “offers trail running camps, day clinics, coaching and consultation to runners from all walks of life.” For more information about Scott, Leah, and their activities visit www.scottjurek.com.
